Responsibilities

Corrections officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates through effective custody and control and compliance with policy and procedure. They employ evidence‑based practices to enhance communication and role modeling within collaborative multidisciplinary teams that address inmate needs. Officers secure adult inmates at the institution and during transport, supervise daily inmate activities, and observe and record inmate behavior and movement to ensure safe and secure confinement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or a GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare reports and documentation.
  • Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre‑employment requirements, including medical screening, background check, and drug testing (including marijuana screening).
  • Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience (preferred).
  • Preference for applicants 21 years or older; a waiver may be granted for ages 18‑20.
  • Bi‑lingual and multi‑lingual applicants encouraged.
