Job DutiesEnhances public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Department of Corrections staff and inmates, by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security services, programming, custody, and control of adult inmates in a major correctional facility.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification.
- Successful completion of mandated training for Correctional Officers and all other mandated training.
- Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, schedule and supervise the work of others.
- Working knowledge in the use of security equipment including firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to sufficiently receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
- Advanced knowledge or equivalent applicable experience and training.
- Current DCJS General Instructor Certification in at least one of the following areas:
Firearms, First Aid/CPR, and Defensive Tactics Certification. - Knowledge of adult training methods.
- Demonstrated ability to produce written reports using a computer.
- Experience delivering training in criminal justice, corrections, or law enforcement environment.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in carrying out group’s tasks within established guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to present class materials to groups in a training setting.
