Job DutiesProvides daily canine support to the unit's security operations. Provides security over adult inmates at the institution and while in transport; supervises the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. Prepares reports and maintains logs. Provides escape prevention duties including supervising inmate movement and activities. Reports on inmate conduct and, when necessary, testifies in court or tinually maintains and ensures proper readiness of assigned security equipment.
In addition to working a security post, earns and maintains patrol handler canine certifications; keeps assigned canine in a state of readiness which includes training, exercising, and feeding. Conducts patrols in secure perimeter.
High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Demonstrated ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements which include medical screening, background check, and drug testing to include screening for marijuana use.
AdditionalConsiderations
Considerable continuous service as a Certified Corrections officer, Senior with a performance rating of "Contributor" or above. Successful completion of all required training. Demonstrates willingness and physical ability to work all posts and shifts. No pattern of excessive absenteeism nor leave abuse. Formal experience or education in training and/or caring for canines.
