Summary

Develops, implements, and monitors safety and security programs to ensure a safe and secure school environment; collaborates with school staff, students, families, public safety officials, and community members to implement programs and enforce school safety and security rules; oversees security staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in safety and security.
  • Must successfully complete compulsory certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty (60) days of hire and renew certification annually.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  • Knowledge of local, county, and state rules and regulations requiring an alcohol-, drug-, weapons- and tobacco-free environment.
  • Knowledge regarding student safety and conduct.
  • Ability to enforce those regulations.
  • Ability to relate to, communicate with, and supervise staff in order to help establish and maintain an appropriate and safe school environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, families, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
Major Duties / Essential Functions
  • Plans, creates, and implements programs that ensure the safety and security of students and staff.
  • Acts as a first responder to emergency incidents on school grounds and at school events.
  • Formulates and exercises decisions affecting the welfare and safety of students and staff on a routine basis and in response to emergency incidents and crisis situations.
  • Enforces school safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Provides consult and subject matter expertise to school administrators.
  • Participates in school committee meetings regarding student conduct and human and community relations.
  • Oversees and enforces parking and bus regulations on school grounds.
  • Serves as school-community relations coordinator by being the primary contact to the public and outside agencies on all matters of school security.
  • Investigates all safety and security incidents occurring on school property to include accidents, loss of personal and school property.
  • Handles disputes and grievances concerning the safety and security of students and staff and provides resolutions to include coordinating the integration of crisis intervention.
  • Oversees the security operations team and emergency preparedness activities to include the development and implementation of preventive plans.
  • Establishes local school safety and security procedures and schedules and participates in the creation and revision of division-wide security policies.
  • May supervise safety and security assistants.
  • Oversees extra- or co-curricular activities after normal school hours.
  • Participates in student activities and may serve as sponsor or coach.
  • Represents the school in court, as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between Fairfax County police and fire safety officials and school administrators.
  • Monitors the school security budget.
  • Oversees the use and monitoring of the school security technology and equipment.
  • Encourages students to promote a positive school environment.
  • Must conform to all requirements pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Physical Requirements

This job operates in a school environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This job requires sufficient strength, mobility, and agility to patrol school hallways and grounds, deter inappropriate behavior, and apprehend students.

Benefits

Salary Range: $61,671 - $107,044
