Job DutiesCorrections officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates. They ensure effective and safe custody and control while complying with policy and procedure. Duties include overseeing adult inmates at the institution and during transport, supervising daily inmate activities, observing and recording behavior and movement, and maintaining a safe and secure confinement.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or a GED equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation.
- Legal possession of a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Successful completion of all pre‑employment requirements, including medical screening, background check, and drug testing (screening for marijuana use).
- Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience.
- Preference given to individuals 21 years or older (waivers may be granted for 18‑20 year olds by the Unit Head).
