Security System Monitor

Summary

Monitors the fire and intrusion detection and alarm systems of all Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) facilities; coordinates communication with Fairfax County fire and police agencies and FCPS schools and offices; maintains accurate and complete logs.

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• Some experience in general office administration.
• Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
• Knowledge of, and/or ability to quickly learn, the operation of an electronic/audio fire and intrusion detection system.
• Knowledge of, and/or ability to quickly learn, the location of FCPS schools and to read and interpret building diagrams, including detector locations.
• Ability to operate a computer, peripheral equipment, and related software.
• Ability to work under pressure and handle crisis situations.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Provides continuous monitoring of the Silent Knight central electronic/audio fire and intrusion detection/alerting system.
• Upon receiving an alarm signal, either contacts the appropriate FCPS security and/or Fairfax County fire or police agencies or makes a decision concerning the appropriate action to take to resolve the issue.
• Maintains a log of all calls.
• Maintains a file of incident reports.
• Monitors fire drills of all FCPS facilities and follows established guidelines to prevent the unnecessary response of fire units.
• Enters into the Silent Knight computer system pertinent data on each alarm and maintains records, as required.
• Periodically compiles and generates required and ad hoc reports from the Silent Knight database.
• Coordinates with the Department of Information Technology, Field Services section, personnel on security intrusion zone changes and installation of new security devices.
• Ensures Silent Intrusion System (SIS) zone maps are correct and updated regularly.
• Prepares backup files.
• Checks unrestored signals and performs general office support and serves as a backup in the utilization of computer entry, retrieval, and printing tasks.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
