Job Description
General Description:
This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, law enforcement, and security operations, linking those in need of assistance to those who render assistance.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. Police department employees may be reassigned to different locations, rotating schedules, and duties based on departmental needs.
This position is not eligible for telework.
Duties and Tasks- Dispatcher position responsible for the public safety at a multi-campus college.
- Responsible for receiving calls for service and dispatching resources, and making appropriate notifications.
- Operate police/emergency communications equipment in accordance with existing guidelines.
- Process requests for service by telephone and in person.
- Maintain computerized daily communications logs.
- Work rotating shifts and mandatory reporting during holidays and inclement weather or other events when the College is closed.
Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications and KSAs- Successfully complete initial DCJS approved dispatcher/communications training.
- Successfully complete department field training.
- Acquire and maintain NCIC/VCIN Level A operator certification.
- Complete department required or DCJS required in-service training.
- Follow instructions and perform with minimum supervision.
- Understand and speak English clearly.
- Excellent oral (no speech limitations) and written communication skills.
- Multi-task various job functions.
- Handle stress under emergency situations.
- Type a minimum of 30 words per minute.
- Hold a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successfully pass a telecommunications assessment.
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be a United States citizen or lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years.
- Pass a thorough background investigation.
- Prior public safety dispatching/call taker experience.
- AAAC PSC Communications Officer Certification from DCJS.
- APCO Telecommunicator I Certification or other APCO certifications.
