Job Duties

The SAU Shift Leader will provide comprehensive emergency communication, consistent and accurate situational awareness, and warning services for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The SAU Shift Leader will operate the Emergency Management communications network during assigned shifts in a 24-hour 7-day a week environment; initiate response activities; allocate state resources during emergencies and disasters; route multiple incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; implement sound decisions to successfully coordinate multiple functions for multiple agencies;

and perform daily operational tests of communication equipment. The SAU Lead will also analyze data and coordinate alert notification services to staff, government organizations, and other emergency response personnel on current Emergency Management media events and local government incident occurrences. Supervise the activities of SAU Analysts during assigned shifts and conduct weekly training for staff. Serves as a resource for assigned staff for the most complex situations.

We are excited to announce that two openings are available for this role, which operates on an overnight schedule with 10‑hour shifts from 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Schedule adjustments may occur based on operational needs.

All VDEM employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, and natural or man‑made disasters/events as directed. This may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official EWP.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of standard communication procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of geographical areas of the state.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of recordkeeping, including the maintenance and security of communications reports.
  • Knowledge of principles and resources for dealing with hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret maps, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to analyze data in order to make decisions and maintain situational awareness across the Commonwealth.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate public safety emergency communications equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with all authority levels of local, state, federal, private sector, and volunteer groups.
  • Ability to operate specialized emergency vehicles.
Additional Considerations
  • Demonstrated experience leading or serving as a watch analyst within an emergency response organization.
  • Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) level B Certification

The salary for this position is negotiable up to the maximum hiring range listed in this posting. Offers will not be made outside of the hiring range.
