Overview
Summary These are temporary positions at Shenandoah National Park with the Buildings, Utilities and Sanitation Branch. These positions perform simple and routine work involved in the cleaning and maintenance and repair of buildings and related utilities. Requires experience in trade work such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, etc. *** This announcement has an early cut-off date (see Duties section for more information).

Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of resources and provides opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. The Park is accessible from the Washington, D.C. area and receives substantial visitation each year.
The primary duties involve multiple trades and crafts including sanitation, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical. Specific duties include:
- Clean, sanitize, and restock supplies for comfort stations, public restrooms, vault toilets, and visitor centers.
- Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
- Assist higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
- Perform minor painting using brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical (e.g., staining picnic tables and trash barrels).
- Perform minor plumbing repairs (tightening/replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures not requiring custom fitting or solder joints); replace faucet washers; unclog drains; replace LP gas bottles.
- Collect trash.
- Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and fire pits using hand tools.
- Operate light trucks to transport supplies and materials to and from work sites.
Work Location
:
Duty stationed at either Park Headquarters Maintenance Area near Luray, VA or Big Meadows Maintenance Area near mile-marker 51 on Skyline Drive.
Conditions of employment
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Direct Deposit: must participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Operation of a government (or private) motor vehicle may be required; a valid driver’s license is required. May require submission of a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record and, at your own expense, driving records from all States that disclose licenses held.
- May be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- Uniform: uniform required with uniform allowance provided.
- Government housing is not available.
- Age requirements as outlined: 18 or 16 with qualified conditions (high school graduation or equivalent, vocational training, or active student employment program).
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118-C) will be used. You must demonstrate through your resume and responses to the questionnaire that you possess the competencies to perform the duties with minimal supervision.

SCREEN OUT

Skilled in at least two trades (carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, painting, etc.), skilled in use and maintenance of tools, cleaning and servicing of public restrooms and facilities; skilled in operating light trucks and lifting moderately heavy materials.

EducationThere is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
