Summary Objective

This position performs technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the city’s utility system.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Performs daily inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure operational efficiency and safety standards are met.
  • Performs maintenance on sewer pumping equipment, evaluates performance for repair or replacement, and cleans equipment by removing grease and other debris.
  • Responds to sewer pumping station alarms, troubleshooting issues and coordinating necessary repairs or adjustments.
  • Performs well maintenance, inspection, and chemical dosage testing to ensure proper functionality of sewer systems.
  • Performs sewer bypass operations, managing the flow in both gravity and force mains to prevent overflows or blockages.
  • Locates underground utilities to avoid accidental damage during maintenance or construction activities.
  • Performs smoke and dye tests in sewers to identify blockages, leaks, and infiltration points.
  • Performs confined space entries into sanitary sewer manholes and pumping stations to conduct maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies, handling unexpected issues and minimizing system downtime or damage.
  • Performs grease trap inspections to ensure proper functioning and compliance with local regulations.
  • Performs sewer service cleaning as needed to maintain system flow and reduce the risk of clogs or backups.
  • Assists with TV inspections of sewer lines to monitor pipe conditions and detect issues that need attention.
  • Operates heavy machinery, including dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, pumps, snow plows, and salt spreaders for various maintenance tasks and emergency responses.
  • Assists with debris removal from streets, ensuring roadways are clear of waste and preventing potential safety hazards.
  • Provides reports and as-built drawings as directed to document system conditions, repairs, and modifications.
  • Assists in other utility operations as needed, contributing to different departments or projects when necessary.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; or knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • At least one (1) to two (2) years of related experience, typically gained through an apprenticeship, internship, or a similar role, sufficient to understand the core principles and responsibilities of the position.

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. The work is typically performed while intermittently walking, sitting, standing, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

  • Bright/dim light;
    Dusts, dirt, grease and pollen.
  • Extreme heat and/or cold;

Special Certifications and Licenses
