Overview

As an Exterior Electrician you will maintain and repair medium voltage (4160V to 34.5kV) electrical equipment for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport. This is a journey (full performance) level position in the Exterior Electrician series. The role serves in the Electrical Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair medium voltage electrical equipment at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Walter Dulles International Airport.
  • Install, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and replace electrical equipment and distribution systems, including medium voltage (4160V to 34.5kV) and low voltage switch gear, MDPs and panels up to 480V.
  • Test and maintain battery banks for switch gear DC control power.
  • Install, test, and maintain airfield lighting systems, associated series circuits, constant current regulators, and airfield lighting controls.
  • Perform generator testing, maintenance, load bank operations, and repairs for both stationary and portable generators ranging from 120V to 4160V.
  • Troubleshoot and repair exterior lighting systems (contractors, controls, ballasts, circuitry) for apron, parking lots, and roadway lighting.
  • Install new electric service, temporary unit substations, MDPs, panels, conduit, and wiring as required for projects.
  • Respond to trouble calls, determine issue scope and impact, and provide concise information to supervisors or airport operations.
  • Carry out work in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and the Airports Authority Design Manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems.
  • One year of specialized experience in installation, test, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of medium voltage electrical equipment and systems.
  • Journey‑level knowledge of tools and testing equipment required for job functions.
  • Ability to analyze drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to work safely and knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using computers and computerized work order, time and attendance systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Journeyman Electrical License (or higher).
  • Certification in MV cable splicing, terminating, and testing.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and repairing airfield lighting systems, series circuits, constant current regulators, and airfield lighting controls.
  • Certification/experience in maintenance and testing of 480V switch gear, breakers, and relays.
  • Class

    B Commercial Driver’s License.

Education
  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Licenses and Certificates Required
  • A state driver’s license in good standing.

    B Commercial Driver’s License within 90days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.
Necessary Special Factors
  • Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
  • Operates aerial lift trucks, scissor lifts, and bucket trucks for overhead electrical systems and lighting repairs.
  • Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (20 to 40lb of force, lifting up to 80lb).
  • May be required to bend, stoop, crouch, or work in cramped positions.
  • Exposed to possible electrical shocks, hazardous materials, and noise.
  • Wears personal protective equipment in accordance with NFPA 70E.
  • Subject to hold‑over and recall on a 24‑hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
  • Required to work various shifts, nights, or weekends.
