Job Overview

HVAC Operator in Charge ensures the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of HVAC equipment at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport. The role involves making technical decisions during shifts, coordinating problem resolution for utilities systems, and performing related duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities
  • Receives and investigates all after‑business‑hours trouble calls and takes appropriate actions.
  • Records readings of meters and gauges on high‑pressure boilers, chillers, thermo‑ice storage machines, and control panels.
  • Adjusts controls as needed and advises the Supervisor when major malfunctions occur or safety controls are not operating properly.
  • Communicates power‑related issues to the Interior Electrician or Electrical OIC and restarts boilers and chillers following power outages.
  • Responds to alarm panels for electrical and water distribution systems.
  • Trains new employees and makes rounds of machine rooms to ensure proper operation and performs minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Responds to trouble calls, troubleshoots malfunctioning HVAC equipment, and assists HVAC Mechanics in preventive maintenance and repair.
  • Applies trade knowledge and uses tools, technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints to conduct HVAC work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment.
  • Full journeyman‑level knowledge and skill in operating, testing, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, and direct others to maintain or restore service.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret schematics, diagrams, and manuals to troubleshoot and isolate system malfunctions.
  • Skill in using tools, technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, manufacturer’s materials, and other resources in journeyman HVAC work.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures for safe work practice.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency and experience with computerized work order and time‑and‑attendance systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed as a journeyman HVAC mechanic.
  • Universal Certification (Section 608) to service HVAC/refrigeration equipment.
Education

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

Certifications and Licenses Required
  • State driver’s license in good standing.
  • Universal Certification (Section 608) to service HVAC/refrigeration equipment within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement.
Necessary Special Factors
  • Work is reviewed for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and related factors.
  • Operation of vehicles on airside and landside; AOA permit required.
  • Moderate to heavy physical exertion, lifting objects up to 75 pounds, bending, stooping, crouching, or working in cramped positions.
  • Potential hazards common to airport environments (fumes, hazardous chemicals, noise from jet aircraft, high‑pressure boilers, burns, falls, moving equipment).
  • Personal protective gear worn as necessary.
  • Subject to hold‑over and recall on a 24‑hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
  • Background security investigation required for all new hires.
