Substation Equipment Operator is an entry level, non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of electric substation systems and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade.
Essential Functions:
- Work safely while performing construction, maintenance and/or repair work of electric substation systems.
- Assist in the transporting, installation, and/or removal of substation structures, equipment, and hardware, electrical conductors, wire, and cable.
- Capable of or learning to operate various types of heavy equipment:
- Bucket, derrick and boom trucks
- Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders
- Articulating Man-lifts
- Pressure Diggers
- Trenchers
- Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe
- Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts
- Read and interpret profile, blueprints, maps, or other written instructions for completion of assigned tasks.
- Does all other related work as required to complete the job.
- Responsible for maintaining company vehicles in good working condition.
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Able to read and understand simple blueprints, maps, and diagrams.
- Able to identify energized high and low voltage lines.
- Basic knowledge in electricity.
- Knowledge of safety hazards inherent in working in close proximity to energized high and low voltage lines and equipment.
- Knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Code as it relates to the operation of heavy equipment in the state the job is located.
- Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
- Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License.
- Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
- 90% Travel Required
- Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent. Formal education and/or training in electrical theory or electronics.
- 2+ years of hands on experience of either equipment operation or demonstrated equivalent knowledge and experience is required.
OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE:
- This position requires English speaking proficiency to ensure effective communication of safety instructions, technical information, and coordination with team members. Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are strongly preferred.
