As a Plumber Pipefitter you will inspect, repair, and maintain the Airports Authority’s plumbing and utility distribution systems in the Utilities Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at either Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) or Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
Responsibilities- Installs pipes, plumbing, and related equipment.
- Conducts emergency repairs on various utility service lines and fabricates parts for older equipment.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on industrial waste, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems—including valves, pumps, and related equipment—using a high‑pressure vacuum/water jet sewage truck to clean lift stations and distribution mains.
- Maintains domestic water systems, inspecting valves, pumps, fixtures, and related equipment.
- Inspects, tests, and repairs backflow prev enters; flushes fire hydrants; operates valves; locates lines; and performs leak detection surveys.
- At DCA, performs preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC mechanical piping distribution systems (Hot Water, Chilled Water, High Temp, Hot Water, and Steam), overhauls steam pressure regulators, and maintains fire protection systems.
- At IAD, maintains natural gas systems per the IAD Operation and Maintenance Manual, takes monthly meter readings, reports repairs to the work order desk, completes work orders, and updates preventive maintenance records.
- Collects water samples for chlorine in compliance with EPA and state regulations.
- Conducts utility line verification using blueprints and locator equipment.
- Performs fire suppression and fire pump testing in accordance with NFPA 25.
- Ensures safety during utility outages, secures the surrounding area, and performs other assigned duties.
- Four years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of plumbing and pipe fitting equipment and systems; OR a Journey License as a Plumber, Pipefitter, or Natural Gas Fitter.
- One year of specialized experience in installation, testing, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and piping equipment, including fire protection, domestic water, natural gas, sanitary and storm sewage, and fuel distribution systems.
- Journey‑level knowledge of plumbing‑pipe fitting to independently inspect, maintain, repair, install, and modify systems.
- Knowledge of building and plumbing codes and skill in interpreting and applying building plans, blueprints, and performing shop mathematics.
- Skill in installing and operating relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, and other pressure‑control devices.
- Proficiency in using tools, technical manuals, schematics, materials, and other equipment for journey‑level plumbing‑piping work.
- Ability to work safely and knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Ability to speak and write effectively.
- Proficiency in using a computer, computerized work order, and time and attendance system.
- A Journey or Master Plumber, Pipefitter, or Natural Gas Fitter license.
- A Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) certification from the Virginia DPOR.
- For IAD only:
Pipeline Operator Qualified (OQ) certification per DOT PHMSA.
- A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- State driver’s license in good standing.
- Valid ClassB CDL within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.
- BPAT license from Virginia DPOR within one year of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.
- For IAD only: DOT Pipeline OQ certification within one year of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.
- Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
- Works in cramped positions, kneeling, stooping, and may lift objects up to 50pounds.
- May be exposed to extreme heat/cold, toxic substances/gases, odors, fumes, raw sewage, and possible burns from chemicals.
- Uses personal protective equipment.
- Subject to hold‑over and recall on a 24‑hour basis for essential services and emergencies (e.g., snow removal).
- Performance reviewed for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, and customer service.
- Shifts may include night hours or weekends as needed.
