Job Description

Performs skilled work in plumbing inspection, installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement. Receives daily work orders from team leader or supervisor.

Essential Job Functions
  • Inspects and services plumbing fixtures and pipes regularly.
  • Locates and opens blocked plumbing in kitchens, drinking fountains, floors, roofs, storm and wall drains, commodes, sewer lines, and grease traps.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces, and maintains plumbing fixtures, including sinks, commodes, drinking fountains, kitchen equipment, hot water heaters; re-pipes boiler lines.
  • Works with other maintenance workers, school officials, and staff to resolve maintenance problems.
  • Handles emergency response to schools during duty hours and may require after-hours and weekend monitoring and response to address issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility

Provides and verifies invoices in a timely manner. Adheres to county spending guidelines.

Report Preparation

Simple written report due upon completion of every work order.

Equipment Operation

Utilizes equipment pertaining to plumbing.

Contacts

Continuous contact with non-exempt Facility Services personnel, Facility Services administrators, facility office staff, and office staff and administrators from individual schools. Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, and contract workers.

Work Direction

Occasional direction given to trades assistants and Facility Coordinators.

Decision Making

Frequent independent decision‑making concerning problem solving as it relates to plumbing. Seek supervisor’s approval for extensive repairs/replacement and all expenditure outside of routine supplies and materials before calling an outside contractor.

reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of cold and heat, some risk of electrical shock, and frequent exposure to toxic chemicals and wastes. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of equipment, practices, and methods associated with plumbing installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of the chemicals and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Considerable knowledge of building codes. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and operations manuals; to work safely and efficiently with various types of equipment, tools, and chemicals and to maintain and service equipment.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and assume responsibility for repair; to prioritize work schedules; to investigate, identify, and correct problems in assigned work areas; to work effectively with other maintenance workers, staff, and the public and to follow oral and written instructions. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.

Job Requirements
  • VA Plumber Journeyman Card. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.
  • Valid VA Driver's License. This position is designated as a driving position. In accordance with Policy 5431, driving record checks are performed annually on individuals occupying driving positions.
