The Prince William County Department of Public Works Construction & Operations Division is looking for a reliable, dedicated, and hard‑working person to join our Drainage Maintenance Team as a Maintenance and Operations Specialist. The Drainage Maintenance Team is vital to the lives of Prince William County to maintain our functioning stormwater infrastructure;
this infrastructure protects our roads, houses, rivers and streams!
This class is part of a Maintenance and Operations Job Family. This position requires performing technical/skilled maintenance tasks combined with coordinating and completing work activities with assigned staff. Responsibilities may include organizing and executing work and assigning and overseeing work for lower‑level staff; monitoring work progress; addressing citizens’ concerns regarding work sites and activities; inspecting completed work; providing technical expertise in complex situations;
troubleshooting field conditions, and using electronic software to research, plan, and complete work.
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience.
Related Experience Includes- Experience executing stormwater/drainage construction or maintenance, including excavation, underground pipe installation, rip‑rap placement, and final site grading.
- Experience directly leading a construction crew and delegating tasks.
- Positive interaction and communication with citizens to resolve concerns and conflicts regarding work.
- Experience operating heavy construction equipment.
- Experience maintaining and providing minor repairs to construction equipment.
- Working knowledge of industry‑related safety requirements.
- 5 years or more related experience including proficient operation of heavy construction equipment/machinery (Excavators, loaders, skid steers, rollers), and installing and repairing gravity pipes.
- Ability to operate plate tampers, compaction machines, heavy and light power tools.
- Working knowledge of scheduling principles, storm/drainage maintenance principles: procedures, and methods.
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment related to applicable maintenance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong record‑keeping principles.
- Proficient use of modern office technology, including GIS and records systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Certification in Trenching and Excavation, Chainsaw Safety, OSHA 10.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License; must pass local, state, and federal background check; must pass a pre‑employment physical.
- Although a CDL is not required for this position, the County may encourage the selected candidate to obtain one at a future time. If obtained, the employee would be required to comply with alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with Federal Transit Administration Mandate Title 49 Transportation Rule 382, Subpart
C. - Must be at least 18 years of age to perform duties which involve handling, applying or otherwise working with hazardous materials.
- Position typically requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, and grasping light to heavy objects.
- Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. - Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
Normal work week is Monday‑Friday 7:00 am‑3:00 pm, with a 7.5‑hour workday and half‑hour lunch, total of 8.0‑hour day. Some Saturday work could be required to support other crews and projects on rare occasions. Overtime would be very limited for this position. This position may also be required to provide support during inclement weather and emergency related events.
Starting Salary Range$25.44 / hr – $36.98 / hr
