Position: HVAC Mechanic (supporting NASA)

Position

ASRC Federal Facilities Logistics, a subsidiary of ASRC Federal, is seeking an HVAC Mechanic to support our NASA prime program at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, VA.

Experience & Training
  • Must meet all Core Job Specifications.
  • Must have completed a recognized air conditioning apprentice program, or technical school or have a minimum of five years of experience working as an air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic.
  • Must also possess current “Universal” license for reclamation of refrigerants.
  • Must be capable of maintaining (including replenishing fluids), modifying, troubleshooting, repairing, adjusting, calibrating, validating, certifying, testing and operating domestic and commercial air conditioning and heating units, associated ventilation systems and building automation controls.
  • Adheres to governing laws, policies and procedures to: remove and replace refrigerants, compressors, condensing units, pumps, fans and other mechanical components.
  • Maintains all related electrical circuitry.
  • Conducts equipment troubleshooting and restoration utilizing trade specific tools and test equipment.
  • Tests and adjusts all components to manufacturer’s specifications.
Responsibilities
  • Knowledgeable of elementary electricity, including relays, capacitors, and split phase motors.
  • Installs, operates, maintains and performs maintenance on all types of domestic and commercial heating, ventilation systems, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and components. Equipment includes but is not limited to: chillers, package air conditioners, heat pumps, oil and gas boilers and furnaces, geothermal units, condensers, ventilation systems, cooling towers, refrigerators, freezers, drinking fountains, ice machines and ice cream cabinets.
  • Troubleshoots systems to determine root cause analysis, makes recommendation for repairs and/or replacement of equipment/components, and performs replacement of components or units, using all types of test equipment, such as voltmeters, gauges, leak detectors, reclaimers, vacuum pumps, charging equipment, meggers, etc.
  • Performs inspections of equipment for damage, wear, inefficient operation, malfunctioning, and evidence of need for overhaul or tear down. Checks such components and elements such as valves, pressure gauges, temperature readings, switch settings, gas leaks, bearing wear, overheating, noise, irregular operation of fans, coils, oil separators, condensers, and compressors. Takes temperature readings, tests for gas leaks, inspects tubing and piping for leaks.
  • Installs refrigerant and piping lines, ductwork per schematic drawings, and connects assemblies in line, such as compressors, condensers, motors, and related units. Conducts equipment and system commissioning.
  • Performs P/Ms, repairs, and installs additional direct digital controllers to the Energy Management Control System including additional points and slave panels.
  • Possesses basic understanding of system concepts, such as ventilation system components, and how to use them; diffusers, duct work, motorized dampers, heating coils, rudiments of sizing and selection; cooling and refrigeration equipment, use of fans and mixing chambers; logical arrangements of components in a system; types and purposes of control valves; and other associated air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Uses manufacturer’s handbooks and related manuals as guides for specifications and for the more complex diagnosis and repair procedures. This includes systems such as the air filtering-dehumidification air conditioning systems as used in various office buildings of the facility as well as controls, such as thermostats, pressure-stats, humidistat, relays, switches, solenoids, and the like.
  • Capable of troubleshooting and repairing refrigeration equipment.
