Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice

Compensation Grade: AT18, Salary Range: $19.63-$31.07. This is a non‑career, term position open for the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice program at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

In this apprenticeship, you will receive on‑the‑job and classroom training to progress from elementary to fully proficient repairs and maintenance in carpentry, roofing, masonry, and other structural trades. The program is part of the state‑approved Airports Authority Trades Apprentice Employment Program, aiming to develop the skills necessary to become a Facilities Maintenance Mechanic.

• Maintain and repair Airports Authority structures including carpentry, roofing, masonry, wood crafting, and other professional trades.
• Use manuals, technical guides, blueprints, diagrams, and hand/power tools.
• Assist full‑performance Mechanics in assembling and transporting tools, and cleaning job sites.
• Learn to stud walls, install drywall, high‑impact panels, frame terminal walls, repair plaster, install and repair flooring and carpet, perform roof repairs, construct masonry/concrete units, and repair wood items.
• Conduct monthly preventive maintenance inspections; make repairs or initiate work orders.
• Apply building, fire, FAA, and other relevant codes and regulations.
• Coordinate with other trades (electricians, plumbers, HVAC) on work sequencing.
• Escort contractors/suppliers as needed.
• Prepare and maintain work orders, trouble calls, and preventive maintenance using the Authority’s computerized system.
• Drive a pickup/truck on airside and landside to job sites and suppliers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Minimum age 18 at hire.
• Eligible to work in the United States.
• Capability to learn the Airports Maintenance Mechanic trade through the apprenticeship schedule.
• Skills in driving a pickup truck and operating related equipment.
• Work safely and follow safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Effective oral and written communication.
• Computer proficiency, including computerized work order and time‑attendance systems.
• Successful completion of an Airports Authority background investigation.

• High school diploma or GED at hire.
• Completion of at least one trade course (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, automotive mechanics) in high school, or current enrollment in an accredited trade program.

• Valid state driver’s license in good standing.
• [DCA Only] Class B Commercial Driver’s License may be required based on assignment.

• Physically demanding work—bending, stooping, crouching, confined space access, heavy lifting up to 75 pounds.
• Perform work outdoors/indoors in all weather conditions (rain, snow, ice). Potential exposure to hazardous materials, temperatures up to 115°F, cutting tools, moving parts, power equipment.
• Use of personal protective equipment mandatory.
• Potential exposure to fall hazards, aircraft noise, shop equipment noise, tar fumes, and equipment vibration.
• Night hours, weekends, hold‑over and recall on a 24‑hour basis for essential services such as snow removal.
• Operate vehicles airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
• Background security investigation required.
