Position: 955 - Data Center Technician L1

Data Center Technician

The Data Center Technician provides a working level of data center knowledge and is responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. The technician maintains and follows processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way.

Responsibilities
  • Develop creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.
  • Maintain mechanical systems including chilled water systems, HVAC units (roof top, CRAC/CRAH, humidification).
  • Maintain electrical systems including utility/generator switch gear, UPS, PDU, and critical power distribution.
  • Maintain fire life safety systems including wet sprinkler, pre‑action sprinkler, and associated detection devices.
  • Test electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters, read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Inspect parts for surface defects; install electrical or electronic components using hand or power tools.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain facility systems; analyze systems for best practices.
  • Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on effectiveness of standards and processes.
  • Work with contractors and consultants to review quality assurance for expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Work with CF Ops Lead Technician to track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Analyze operating conditions, recommend new technologies, and improve overall efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned customer-impacting events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; maintain regular attendance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems used in data centers, including transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, STS, ATS, PDUs, chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinklers.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and related building codes.
  • Experience with industrial safety best practices: lockout/tag‑out, arc flash protection, OSHA regulations.
  • Familiarity with data trending/tracking and analysis using PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems.
  • Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting commercial and industrial systems such as chiller, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment, VFDs, pumps, HVAC equipment, humidification, water heaters, filters, BMS, PLC controls, standby diesel generators, fuel systems, and UPS.
  • Excellent written and oral communication; ability to coordinate with customers and contractors.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to operate hand, power, and electrical tools and forklift.
  • Ability to work in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities; willing to work nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Strong critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills; ability to multitask multiple projects.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent). Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 2 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (preferably data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant).
  • CRP/First Aid and NFPA 70E certification during employment.
  • OSHA approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire.
  • Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent with minimum 3 years in a mechanical/electrical position in critical facilities (preferably data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant).
Physical Requirements

Primarily walking, standing, and bending; lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders and working on raised platforms; close visual work on a computer terminal. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment and computer input devices.

Work Conditions

Data center environment with varying temperatures, loud noises, and extensive daily use of a workstation or computer. Work is performed on‑site; no telecommuting.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly base salary: $33.00 – $61.25, eligible for overtime in accordance with local state and federal Wage and Hour requirements. All regular full‑time employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance. Benefits include paid time‑off, medical, dental, and vision, life and supplemental insurance, short‑term and long‑term disability, flexible spending account, and 401(k) retirement plan.
