Job DescriptionMountain Empire Community College
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
The Mechanical Trades Technician provides the total campus population with an environmentally safe and secure area for the fulfillment of their educational purpose. Performs tasks in support of, or preparatory to, the work of electricians in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment up to performing complex electrical work in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
Prepares sketches or follows blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes. Places conduit, pipes, or tubing, inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pulls insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes. Works from ladders, scaffolds, or roofs to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures.
Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as ammeters and test lamps. Assembles, installs, tests, or maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools. Troubleshooting and repairing HVAC systems and plumbing systems campus-wide. This position is designated as an essential position and is not telework eligible.
