Position: Family Safety Practitioner I

Overview

Join Fairfax County Government to shape racial and social equity policies through the One Fairfax Policy. This role offers a $2,500 signing bonus for new county hires (full‑time).

About This Position

The Adult and Aging Division seeks an Adult Services Family Safety Practitioner I to support families and clients with assessment, care planning, referrals, and service coordination.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct entry‑level assessment of clients’ social, health, emotional, and economic needs and develop and monitor a plan of service.
  • Make referrals, provide consultation, and monitor service implementation.
  • Support co‑workers with routine client check‑in calls, documentation, follow‑up, and referrals.
  • Identify and utilize available resources and refer clients to public and private agencies.
  • Assist clients and families with Medicaid applications and documentation.
  • Maintain documentation of available resources for staff use.
  • Perform administrative tasks and, when required, drive agency vehicles to county facilities for repair and maintenance.
  • Apply assessment, care planning, and coordination skills to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to deadlines and crisis situations.
  • Participate in local meetings.
  • Work with clients, families, and service providers to resolve service delivery issues.
  • Complete required paperwork and follow state policies.
  • Utilize local and state information systems to keep client records and track progress.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of professional casework principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of current social service problems and effective methods to address them.
  • Knowledge of law, policy, regulation, and guidelines relevant to the assigned area.
  • Ability to analyze case information and make sound decisions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use case management and documentation software systems.
  • Commitment to professional ethics and confidentiality.
  • Skill in establishing effective working relationships with diverse individuals and organizations.
  • Capacity to schedule and manage workload to meet policy and court deadlines.
  • Empathy and emotional intelligence when engaging with persons from different cultures in stressful family situations.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a human services field OR a bachelor’s degree in any field with at least two years of appropriate and related experience in a human services area. Candidates who do not yet meet the degree requirement must be in the final semester of a qualifying degree program. Some positions may require additional certification or experience. All candidates must complete state‑mandated training in the functional area within a specified time period.

Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Completion of state‑mandated training in the functional area.
Additional Requirements

Appointees must complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Bonus Eligibility

General merit positions may be eligible for a one‑time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees, requiring a signed payback agreement.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Full‑time equivalent professional or human services experience in adult protective services, adults with disabilities, child protective services, homeless shelters, hospital social work, housing, intellectual disabilities, mental health, or older adults.
  • At least one year of full‑time experience conducting home visits.
  • At least one year of full‑time experience working with a diverse multicultural population.
  • At least one year of full‑time experience in an interdisciplinary team setting.
  • Experience working in a public, state or local social services agency.
  • At least one year of full‑time experience with computerized case management programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access).
Physical Requirements

The position requires competent use of administrative tools, occasional driving, and the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, bend, and lift as necessary. The applicant should be able to read printed materials, operate computer equipment, and transport clients if required. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
