Benefit Programs Specialist II

The Benefit Programs Specialist II is a full-time position with the Botetourt County Department of Social Services responsible for determining and redetermining eligibility for financial assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, and other social service benefits. The role involves interviewing clients, processing applications, monitoring cases for changes in circumstances, identifying potential fraud, and making referrals to appropriate services. This is the full-performance level position in the occupational group, requiring independent judgment in evaluating social factors while following established policies and procedures.

• Working knowledge of public service organizations, economic and human behavior, and financial assistance program eligibility requirements
• Skill in operating personal computers and agency software with ability to establish and maintain case records and access data systems
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals including customers, employers, courts, and medical professionals
• Ability to interview, gather information, analyze data from multiple sources, and make sound judgments under stressful situations
• High school diploma with additional training and related work experience in social services
• Preferred:
  Previous experience in a Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) in a senior or lead worker role
