Under general supervision, the primary responsibility is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Ensures the safety of all patrons in the aquatic facility. Responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the aquatics facility. Reports to the Pool Manager/ Assistant Pool Manager on duty.
Responsibilities- Supports the mission, vision, and goals of Spotsylvania County Parks & Recreation Dept.
- Maintains vigilance without lapses in concentration.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the Parks & Recreation Pool Operating Procedures Manual.
- Inspects safety equipment at the beginning of shift to ensure that safety equipment is in the proper place and ready for use.
- Reports damaged equipment and, if possible, removes it.
- Reports any accidents or disciplinary problems to the pool manager on duty.
- Monitors the vending area, restrooms, and deck area for litter and sanitizing needs while walking through the facility.
- Enforces pool policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the aquatics facility in accordance with the Pool Operating Procedures Manual. Maintains effective, positive relationships with patrons and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies facility safety rules, policies, and guidelines.
- Enforces all pool rules with all patrons in a fair, polite, and consistent manner.
- Ensures that the aquatic environment is free of obstructions and safe for participant use.
- Ensures the facility is secure, monitors and checks all doors and gates are locked before leaving the swimming pool area.
- Responsible for maintaining all relative certifications.
- Wears proper uniform (County issued) and represents the Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Dept. in a professional manner at all times.
- Attends all required staff meetings and in-service trainings as scheduled.
- Maintains a clean and safe facility to include pool, deck, chairs, restrooms, pool office, and vending area.
- Curates misuse of the facility and equipment.
- Monitors and safeguards all equipment belonging to the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Ensures that at no time are swimmers/patrons left unattended. Ensures Lifeguard to patron ratios are met at all times.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Must be 15 years of age or older.
Must possess valid Certifications in ARC Lifeguard Training & CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/First Aid/AED).
Must successfully complete mandatory Parks & Recreation Training Program before specific job duties are assigned.
Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and drug screen.

- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the purpose, policies, and procedures of the department’s recreational programs.
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to prepare a variety of reports and records; ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in contact with County officials, administration, and the general public.
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
- Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence.
- Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and policies, and follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and objectives.
