Fleet Coordinator/Public Safety Vehicle Installer

Summary

Reporting directly to the Deputy Director of General Services the Fleet Coordinator and Public Safety Vehicle Installer is responsible for performing complex technical, supervisory, and administrative work related to the installation, maintenance, and management of the County’s public safety and general vehicle fleet. This position balances hands‑on vehicle upfitting and electrical installation duties with fleet management, budgeting, staff supervision, and regulatory compliance to ensure safe, reliable, and cost‑effective fleet operations.

Acts as a technical and operational resource to multiple County departments.

Essential Functions of the Position

Performs professional, technical, and administrative duties related to fleet management and public safety vehicle installation.

Fleet Management, Administration, and Supervision

  • With limited supervision, plans, organizes, and manages daily fleet operations, including preventive maintenance programs, vehicle repairs, inspections, and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Collaboratively develops and implements fleet policies, procedures, and service standards to ensure operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
  • Assists with the development, administration, and monitoring of the fleet budget; tracks expenditures and recommends cost‑effective solutions.
  • Oversees procurement processes, including preparation of specifications, evaluation of bids and proposals, and coordination of vehicle and equipment purchases.
  • Oversees, develops, and delivers training related to safety practices, equipment installation, and fleet maintenance procedures.
  • Monitors compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including DOT, OSHA, CDL, and environmental requirements.
  • Prepares operational, financial, and performance reports; analyzes fleet data and makes recommendations regarding replacement planning and service improvements.
  • Serves as a liaison with County departments, public safety agencies, vendors, and external service providers.
  • Responds to emergency vehicle needs and critical service requests to support public safety operations as needed.

Public Safety Vehicle Installation and Technical Services

  • Installs, configures, removes, and troubleshoots public safety and emergency vehicle equipment, including but not limited to radios, lighting systems, sirens, camera systems, consoles, partitions, docking stations, and related electronics.
  • Performs advanced automotive electrical work, including routing, terminating, soldering, and splicing wiring and cables in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
  • Disassembles and reassembles vehicle interior and exterior components as required to properly mount and secure equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical and equipment malfunctions; performs functional testing to ensure proper operation and compliance with safety standards.
  • Completes and maintains accurate work orders, installation records, and equipment documentation within the fleet management system.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with OSHA and County safety policies.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and installation inventory; identifies supply needs and assists with procurement.
  • Provides technical assistance and recommendations regarding vehicle upfitting standards, equipment selection, and installation best practices.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of fleet management principles, preventive maintenance practices, and vehicle lifecycle planning.
  • Advanced knowledge of automotive electrical systems and public safety vehicle upfitting techniques.
  • General knowledge of procurement practices, budgeting principles, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing fleet operations and public safety equipment.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to analyze technical, operational, and financial data and prepare clear and concise reports.
