SCHOOL BUS DRIVER - 182 DAY
JOB SUMMARYThe school bus driver operates a school bus to transport students safely to and from schools and authorized bus stop locations. The driver performs driving functions safely and efficiently, remains at the assigned standby location when not on an assignment, and may be assigned a run or set of runs on a temporary basis. The driver also provides transportation service for students on extracurricular events, conducts scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills, and operates the bus in compliance with School Division policies, Transportation Department instructions, and state laws.
SCHEDULE:
7.5 hours/day split shift. The position requires the ability to work in person and physically report to work on site.
Route Manager, Administrative Coordinator, Bus Operations Supervisor, and Director of Transportation Services may provide guidance and direction.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma, general education (GED) preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of three years’ driving experience.
- Ability to gain the knowledge of Virginia Department of Education and School Division policies, regulations, and laws.
- Ability to operate a school bus in a safe and effective manner and drive defensively under a variety of road, weather, and traffic conditions.
- Ability to operate wheelchair lift and wheelchair/passenger restraint systems.
- Ability to recognize and report malfunctioning automotive and wheelchair lift equipment.
- Ability to read, write, and follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, and establish and maintain strong working relationships with students, school staff, the general public, and others.
- Ability to maintain discipline over student passengers and to manage student behavior in a manner that is conducive to safe driving. Ability to take initiative to make timely and accurate decisions and adapt to change while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Ability to use good judgment and recognize and react well to emergency situations.
- Ability to identify a medical emergency and take appropriate action.
- Ability to operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with Transportation office and other drivers.
Eligible candidates are hired as substitutes and receive paid commercial driver's license (CDL) training. After all position requirements are met, a full-time bus driver position is offered when available.
STATE REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
- Must have a physical examination of a scope prescribed by the Board of Education.
- Must furnish a statement or copy of records from the Department of Motor Vehicles showing that the records of such Department do not disclose that the person, within the preceding five years, has been convicted upon a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, convicted of a felony or assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program pursuant to section 18.2-271.1 or, within the preceding 12 months, has been convicted of two or more moving traffic violations or required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to section 46.2-498.
- Must furnish a statement signed by two reputable persons who reside in the School Division or in the applicant's community that the person is of good moral character.
- Must have reached the age of 18 by the first day of the school year.
- Must submit to alcohol and controlled substance testing.
- Must have completed requirements for American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and the Virginia Department of Education’s school bus driver training.
The employee must have sufficient strength and agility to move, lift, and secure students in child safety restraint systems weighing up to 50 pounds and assist students in entering and exiting the bus in routine and emergency situations. The driver must be able to perform any required emergency evacuation functions to include, but not limited to, entering and exiting the school bus.
