Position Summary:
The School Bus Driver(s) position is a full‑time role (30 hours per week) with a split‑shift work schedule. Incumbents hired must first work as substitutes before receiving a permanent assignment. This is a non‑12‑month employee position.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from the state in which the driver resides, or Class A/B Learners or CDL License.
- Must be 21 years or older.
- Ability to operate a school bus safely and efficiently in an urban setting.
- Ability to supervise groups of students while driving.
- Ability to understand directions for bus routes, bus stops, and the pick‑up schedule.
- Successful completion of the driver‑training program offered by Arlington Public Schools.
- Successful completion of the annual bus driver physical required by the Virginia State Board of Education.
- Negative test results for alcohol abuse and controlled substances as required by U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.
- Driving record: within the preceding five (5) years, no convictions of DUI or controlled substances, no felony convictions, and no alcohol safety or rehab program assignments; within the preceding twelve (12) months, no two (2) or more moving traffic violations and no required driver improvement clinic.
- Safely transport groups of children to and from school following assigned routes and schedules.
- May be assigned field trips, extracurricular activity runs, or other runs within a 50‑mile radius of Arlington, or occasionally to more distant locations.
- Pick up and discharge children at designated bus stops.
- Assist children with physical disabilities when boarding or leaving the bus.
- Maintain order on the bus; report names of unruly passengers to the appropriate school principal and to the Supervisor of Transportation.
- Complete daily checks of the condition of the assigned bus before leaving the Transportation yard.
- Maintain bus cleanliness and check gas, oil, and water levels daily.
- Report any deficiencies needing repair or maintenance.
- File all required reports.
- Comply with all laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operations, observe posted speed limits, and report any accidents or damage to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Notify the Arlington Public Schools Employee Assistance Program of any therapeutic drugs prescribed within twenty‑four (24) hours of the doctor writing the prescription.
