- All persons employed as drivers in Powhatan County Public Schools will meet the laws and regulations of the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Administrative Code, the Virginia Department of Education, and the PCPS School Board Policies.
- Transports students to and from school in a safe, efficient, and economical manner on a daily basis; and to and from extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicle prior to and after every trip identifying defects and reporting to the bus garage.
- Keep the bus fueled above half a tank consistently.
- Turn in, and fully complete, the following monthly reports by the 1st of each month:
- monthly pre-inspection form
- other reports as requested
- Keep a legible copy of the route and schedule in the vehicle at all times adhering to said time schedule and route when operating the vehicle.
- When operating the assigned vehicle, the driver is required to have in their possession the appropriate valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle driven.
- Obtain an annual physical examination certifying ability to perform duties as a school bus/vehicle driver. The physical form must be turned in prior to picking up the assigned vehicle at the beginning of the school year.
- Maintain good attendance and report absences in a timely manner for the supervisor to secure the substitute driver.
- Follow all procedures in reporting complaints, accidents, and student injuries to the proper authorities.
- Become familiar with the contents of the first aid kit and the proper procedures for issuing the contents.
- Bring vehicles to the school bus garage for inspection according to an established Schedule.
- Conduct emergency evacuation drills in keeping with division regulations.
- Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.
- Maintain professional attitude and establishes favorable working relationships with other drivers, teachers, students, and other school staff.
- Demonstrate knowledge and follow all Federal laws, State laws, and local ordinances, to include mandated regulations regarding drug testing.
- Comply with dress code.
- Keep the assigned vehicle clean inside and out, including windows, windshield, lights, and license plates.
- Will not use the assigned vehicle, or other School Board owned vehicle, for any purpose except to transport Powhatan school children to and from school unless authorized by the Supervisor of Transportation
- Will not allow any person to enter assigned vehicle unless authorized by the Supervisor of Transportation.
- Will not use a cell phone, except in the case of an emergency when bus radio is inoperable, and there is a need to call the bus shop or police.
- Will not smoke while in or around a School Board vehicle.
- Will demonstrate the ability to deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders.
- Will administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with school board policies and administrative regulations.
- Will perform any other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.
Must have qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
Education and/or Experience- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Meets school bus driver certification requirements with minimum hours of instruction and satisfactorily pass the knowledge examination as outlined by the Department of Education Pupil Transportation.
- Must have a valid CDL License (training provided)
- Meet State physical examination requirements.
- Meet local and/or State standards for driving test.
- Meet local and/or State standards for driver record check.
- Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students in school division.
- Ability to operate radio communication when necessary.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or the public.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.
