Position: Coordinator, Transportation Area - 250 Day

This position is highly skilled, managerial work. The employee plans and coordinates an assigned area of Transportation to assure the safe and efficient transportation of students in Prince William County Public Schools. This position supervises, schedules, and assesses personnel directly in the provision of services. This position is responsible for the overall management of bus routes, load levels, and daily operations, and provides guidance to route managers, routing analysts, and bus dispatchers in resolving other operational tasks.

This position provides leadership and supervision to subordinates within the section. This position serves as the basic public relations facilitator between the Transportation Department and the general public.

Essential Responsibilities Specific to This Job
  • Applies a strong understanding of local, state and federal regulations related to Pupil Transportation, ensuring accurate interpretation and implementation.
  • Coordinates the assignment of bus schedules and ensures safe travel routes and arrival at schools of destination prior to published bell schedules.
  • Supervises the use and oversees the maintenance of facilities including an operations center, bus parking area, and vehicle maintenance shops.
  • Provides leadership and evaluates the performance of route managers and support personnel through daily observation and reviews to assure adherence to assigned duties.
  • Manages personnel matters of staff assigned to the Center by utilizing the established PWCS performance management process.
  • Coordinates and conducts regularly scheduled team meetings.
  • Serves as a key communicator for all matters related to the Center operations.
  • Instructs and directs staff in specific measures necessary for the safe transportation of students.
  • Ensures compliance with work schedules, safety procedures, and departmental guidelines.
  • Investigates accidents of School Board owned vehicles, completes required reports, and provides necessary support involving litigation.
  • Manages and produces data necessary to identify gaps and trends impacting transportation operations and recommends data-driven decisions.
  • Participates in meetings, in-service training, conferences, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to grow professionally.
  • Stays current with administrative training and applies knowledge to daily operations.
  • Responds promptly and professionally to inquiries from schools and families, offering solutions and support.
  • Designs, organizes, and facilitates training sessions to enhance staff knowledge and service quality.
  • Attends meetings to present pupil transportation policies and regulations and state and local laws.
  • Serves as a member of the Vehicle Services and Operations Readiness Response Team.
  • Serves as a member of the after-hours On-Call Representative Team.
  • Operates a school bus in emergency or unexpected circumstances.
  • Serves as the designee-in-charge of the Bus Operations Section in the absence of the Supervisor of Bus Operations.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
  • Ensures all transportation operations consistently comply with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) general education and specialized transportation laws and regulations.
  • Ensures special needs transportation equipment is used correctly, safely, and in accordance with student requirements and established procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, School Division, and Office of Transportation policies, practices, and procedures of student transportation.
