Transportation Manage Transportation Manager
- Job Defined Agreement (JDA)

Position Summary

The Transportation Manager is responsible for leading all transportation and fleet operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of products to customers. The role oversees drivers, routing, fleet management, compliance, transportation technology, and service performance.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the VP/COO. Directly supervises drivers, transportation coordinators, and transportation support personnel. Works closely with Warehouse Operations, Customer Success, HR, and Purchasing.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage daily transportation operations, driver scheduling, route execution, fleet performance, safety, compliance, customer delivery performance, staffing, and operational improvement initiatives.
Transportation Technology & Route Optimization
  • Lead implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of routing software, GPS systems, telematics, and transportation technology.
  • Optimize routes, improve delivery density, reduce transportation costs, develop KPI dashboards, train staff on transportation technology, and utilize data analytics to improve operational performance.
Driver Leadership & Development
  • Recruit, train, coach, evaluate, and develop transportation personnel.
  • Promote accountability, professionalism, safety, and customer service excellence.
Fleet Management
  • Coordinate fleet maintenance, monitor vehicle condition, maintain maintenance records, and support replacement planning.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure DOT compliance, maintain driver qualification records, conduct safety training, investigate incidents, and promote a safety-first culture.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

On-Time Delivery %, Route Efficiency, Cost per Delivery, Driver Productivity, Fleet Utilization, Safety Metrics, DOT Compliance, Driver Retention, Customer Delivery Satisfaction, Transportation Cost as % of Sales, Route Optimization Improvements, and Technology Utilization.

Qualifications Qualifications & Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of transportation, logistics, or distribution experience and 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with routing software, DOT compliance, fleet management, route optimization, and transportation leadership required.
  • Produce, food service, grocery, or beverage distribution experience preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • OSHA certification for forklift operation and other warehouse/material handling equipment is preferred or required as determined by company policy.
  • This position is classified as Exempt under applicable wage and hour laws.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Must be able to work in warehouse, transportation, and outdoor environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and operational conditions.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, reach overhead, twist, stoop, kneel, and perform repetitive physical movements necessary to safely handle products, equipment, and materials.
  • Must be able to regularly lift, carry, push, pull, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must possess the ability to stand and/or walk for four (4) or more consecutive hours on hard surfaces and in refrigerated or cold-temperature environments.
  • Must be available to work Saturdays on a rotating schedule and additional hours as business needs require.
Authority & Decision-Making

Authority to manage schedules, assign routes, supervise transportation personnel, recommend hiring and disciplinary actions, and coordinate maintenance activities. Major capital expenditures and policy decisions require executive approval.

A successful Transportation Manager will build a dependable transportation team, improve route efficiency, implement transportation technology, maintain compliance, enhance customer service, and reduce dependency on the VP/COO for day-to-day transportation management.
