Job Description
The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing nursing skills to carry out the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. The role requires quality communication, teamwork, and professionalism. The RN also directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. A Registered Nurse Per Diem (RN PD) is responsible for the care of the population assigned, completes yearly mandatory competencies, unit-specific competencies, and Professional Practice Ladder requirements.
The RN PD assumes charge nurse duties, participates in PI activities, communicates with director/designee, attends education, seminars, conferences, workshops, and submits portfolio annually by March 1st. The RN PD routinely solicits patient/family satisfaction, participates in peer review, and develops educational materials for staff, patients, and families.

Education- Associate’s Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) required.
- Bachelor’s Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Two years of RN experience required.
Certification & Licensures- RN License required; must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure in Virginia, with a multi‑state or single‑state license.
- BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart ’Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) – AHA approved required. New hires must have AHA certification before orientation.
- Relevant specialty certification preferred.
- Competent in providing care based on cognitive, physical, emotional, and developmental stages of human growth.
- Competent to provide care to patients using the nursing process.
- Must have reliable phone communication with hospital.
- If an RNA beginning employment as an RN I or promoting from any VH position, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter (or interim verification) from the Virginia Board of Nursing.
