Substitute School Nurse
The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary nursing services to support the health and safety of students and staff during the absence of the regularly assigned school nurse. The Substitute Nurse delivers professional nursing care in accordance with Virginia Department of Education guidelines, Virginia Department of Health regulations, and applicable school division policies.
The Substitute School Nurse shall:
- Provide direct nursing care to students and staff in accordance with established medical protocols and school health policies
- Assess student health needs and respond to illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and authorized, in compliance with division procedures and state regulations
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records and documentation
- Communicate effectively with school administrators, parents or guardians, and healthcare providers as appropriate
- Support students with chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, allergies, and seizure disorders
- Implement communicable disease control measures in coordination with school administration
- Assist with health screenings and other school health initiatives as needed
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized health clinic environment
- Follow all school division policies related to safety, confidentiality, and student supervision
Knowledge of school health services, nursing practices, and emergency procedures
Ability to assess health conditions and respond appropriately in urgent situations
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment
Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and school staff
Current Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Current CPR and First Aid certification
Prior experience in school nursing or pediatric care preferred
