Overview

Job Description: The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse. Under the supervision of the nurse, CNAs perform care appropriate to the patient population served and meet daily routine patient care needs. The CNA performs duties based on the unit care delivery model and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse.

The CNA adheres to a culture reflective of Centra's best practices for quality and service, creates and maintains a safe patient environment, and contributes to a healthy work environment. The CNA's practice reflects the laws and regulations for a Certified Nurse Aide as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Responsibilities
  • Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse and as outlined in the plan of care. Assists with activities of daily living (bathing, meals, ambulating, toileting, turning and repositioning) and maintains patient stability by checking and recording vital signs and documenting intake and output.
  • Promotes patient comfort by answering call lights (if applicable to work area) and communicating observations or patient needs to the nursing staff.
  • Contributes to a safe and efficient admission, transfer, and/or discharge process.
  • Maintains patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity in the care process.
  • Creates and maintains a clean and safe environment on the unit and in patient rooms and areas to protect patients from harm.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures in the delivery of care and when interacting with other caregivers.
  • May handle medication delivered by the Pharmacy, directly or via pneumatic tube system, and transport to an appropriate storage area or to another qualified employee (if applicable to work area).
  • Applies unit service excellence best practices in approaching patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Uses resources (time, people, supplies, etc.) cost effectively.
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives and provides care consistent with regulatory and legal expectations and standards.
  • Consistently practices Centra safety behaviors and handles conflict resolution opportunities in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Engages in professional development through self-appraisal, academic credits, or attendance at educational programs.
Qualifications

Required: Certifications and Licensures:
Must be certified as a Nurse Aide by the Virginia Department of Health Professions;
American Heart Association BLS CPR Completion.

Preferred: Education:
High School Diploma / GED.

Addendums
  • Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Centra Internal Travel Team

    REQUIRED:

    At least 1 year of recent acute care experience;
    Valid Virginia Driver’s License. PREFERRED:
    Cardiology setting experience.
  • Certified Nursing Aide – Stroobants — UNDER THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE RN, performs patient care activities and other tasks to assist with primary care in the clinic; monitors cardiac equipment and patient education.

    REQUIRED:

    1 year CNA experience;
    Valid VA Driver’s License. PREFERRED:
    Cardiology clinical background.
  • Certified Nursing Aide – Home Health — UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF RNs and therapists. Duties include hands-on personal care, simple procedures as an extension of therapy or nursing services, ambulation/exercises, and occasional medication assistance. Must be part of the interdisciplinary team; complete records according to HHA policies. In-service training minimum 12 hours per year.

    REQUIRED:

    1 year CNA experience;
    Valid VA Driver’s License. PREFERRED:
    Home Health experience. Travel: 100%.
  • Certified Nursing Aide - Hospice — UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RNs and therapists.

    REQUIRED:

    1 year CNA experience. PREFERRED:
    Hospice or Homecare experience. Travel: 100%.
