EMT-Basic - Giles Transport

Responsibilities

• Administers basic life support care and transport to patients in pre‑hospital settings as authorized and directed by a physician.
• Performs a variety of skills related to acute and non‑acute settings in ground transport.
• Responds to medical emergencies in a 911 setting and provides cardiac and trauma support when needed.
• Administers initial treatment at the emergency scene, assesses patient response, and makes adjustments as needed.
• Gathers and analyzes information, using sound judgment in emotional situations.
• Manages difficult customer situations while maintaining confidentiality.
• Assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures or the need for additional assistance.
• Administers emergency procedures such as extrication of patients, defibrillation, and other non‑invasive treatments.
• Administers medications and initiates treatments at the basic level.
• Observes, records, and reports patient condition and reactions to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents to physician or command center personnel.
• Utilizes excellent communication skills when dealing with staff, peers, patients, and family members in diverse situations.
• Keeps current on treatment techniques, protocol changes and new drugs, materials, and equipment.
• Takes responsibility for own actions and the actions of support team members.
• Coordinates activities with external entities when needed.
• Prepares required reports and maintains records of activities.
• Obtains all information needed for insurance billing and has knowledge of covered and non‑covered charges as they pertain to ambulance services and insurance guidelines.
• Writes clearly and presents numerical data and patient reports effectively and on time.
• Maintains basic computer skills and applicable software.
• Checks daily units assigned, cleans and stocks, and reports malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic.
• Maintains cost efficiency in supplies and uses resources appropriately.
• Transports patients to hospital and non‑hospital sites while observing safety guidelines.
• Maintains knowledge of state and federal laws, and follows agency protocols, Carilion policies and procedures regarding safety and patient care.
• Maintains continuing education requirements by national, state and Carilion standards.

• High School graduate or equivalent required.
• Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Virginia.
• AHA BLS – HCP required.
• HAZMAT Awareness and PHTLS or BTLS Basic required within one year of hire date.
• Must maintain continuing education hours to meet recertification status as required by state and national standards.
• Must provide a copy of the current driving record and meet all eligibility requirements.
• Must maintain an excellent driving record.
