Externship Overview

An externship experience at a National Veterinary Associates (NVA) hospital gives veterinary students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Though each NVA hospital is unique, they share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on exceptional service to animals and their pet owners.

• Gather patient histories
• Perform physical examinations
• Create treatment plans
• Assist with diagnostics and dentistry services
• Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures
• Manage patients medically under supervision
• Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Externships typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on the student’s schedule and hospital availability. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Students can view stipend amounts and program details on the official careers site.
