Carpenter Co. has an immediate opening for a Health and Safety Manager at its Richmond location, supporting both the Manufacturing Plant and Reinhart Technical Center. The Health and Safety Manager will partner with Plant Operations, R&D, and leadership teams to identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, implement preventative measures, investigate incidents, and deliver safety training. This position will report to the Industrial Hygiene Manager, with a dotted line report to the Plant General Manager and Director of Health and Safety.
This role requires on-site attendance and is not eligible for remote work. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm (or 8:00am to 5:00pm as needed). The expected salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000. Actual pay will depend on relevant background, qualifications, industry experience, and skills.
Additional responsibilities of the Health and Safety Manager include:
- Implement and manage health and safety policies, procedures, and programs. This includes administration of day-to-day safety programs to contractors and visitors.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local regulations, and safety standards as outlined in the employee handbook
- Conduct workplace risk assessments, job hazard analyses, and safety audits
- Respond to and conduct incident investigations, including determining root causes, partnering with key players
- Conduct safety orientation to newly hired employees and temporary staff
- Manage the Worker's Compensation Program including reporting, claims administration with adjuster and documentation to ensure compliance with State WC Statutes.
- Enforce safety rules, advise on course correction and administer disciplinary procedures
- Monitor and report safety performance metrics, trends, and regulatory compliance
- Support emergency preparedness and response planning, including drills
- Consult and collaborate with manufacturing and R&D Leaders in the identification and resolution of safety issues in order to reduce operational risks. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to achieve company safety objectives and zero-incident goals.
- Oversee safety programs, including exposure monitoring for noise, chemicals, and ergonomic hazards
- Develop and modify, as necessary, short and long-term plans for the continuous improvement of the safety program
- Analyze facility procedures, process equipment and chemical properties to identify and proactively respond to potential hazards
- Lead and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives
- Research and develop safety training presentations and provide related training information to department managers.
- Conduct inspections of manufacturing equipment, laboratories, pilot plants, and technical testing areas
- Maintain regulatory records, permits, OSHA logs, and required documentation
- Perform other duties as required to ensure sustainable compliance and continuous improvement in Health and Safety.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or science related field
- 5-10 years of health and safety experience in manufacturing, industrial, chemical, or automotive environment
- Direct experience with employee safety compliance, OSHA standards, safety management systems, industrial hygiene, electrical safety, chemical management, ergonomics, and risk assessment methodologies
- Experience with incident investigation
- Functional knowledge of Federal and State Safety/Health Laws (e.g. OSHA)
- Ability to interact well with all levels of the organization and maintain strong relationships with peers and internal customers
