Laboratory and Research Specialist

Eastern Shore Laboratory (ESL), located in Wachapreague, VA (Eastern Shore) invites qualified applicants to apply for the Laboratory and Research Specialist. Come join a great team of dedicated and collaborative research professionals!

The Laboratory and Research Specialist supports field and laboratory research on water quality monitoring and analysis and other research activities of VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory (ESL). This position also serves as the coordinator for outreach and education on behalf of VIMS ESL, including external agencies and K-12 school systems on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain electronic water quality monitoring stations and equipment, including fixed sonde stations for real-time and archived data records, and calibration of hand-held and portable systems.
  • Data management, quality control, analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain external contacts with local agencies, non-profit organizations, K-12 STEM teachers and programs, and other outreach and education clients.
  • Coordinate outreach and education scheduling and logistics with ESL staff for onsite and offsite activities.
  • Provide outreach and education to local events and external clients as the VIMS ESL representative.
  • Participate and lead field trips on small boats for visiting students and scientists.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Experience working in laboratory and field operations.
  • Experience in educational settings or with outreach and education activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with operating and maintaining electronic water quality monitoring stations and equipment, including fixed sonde stations, and calibration of hand-held and portable systems.
  • Experience with data management, quality control, analysis, and reporting.
  • Able to develop and maintain external contacts with local agencies, non-profit organizations, K-12 STEM teachers and programs, and other outreach and education clients.
  • Experience coordinating and organizing outreach and educational events for onsite and offsite activities.
  • Skilled in lead field trips on small boats for visiting students and scientists.
  • Nutrient chemistry and water quality analysis
  • Familiar with small boat operations
