Job Summary
Position: Security Officer – 20 hours per week,
Weekend Nights at VCUHS.
The Security Officer provides security services to VCUHS by courteously assisting staff, visitors and patients; enforcing hospital rules and regulations; projecting a positive image; and promoting a safe healthcare environment. The assignment is an unarmed, non‑sworn job.
Responsibilities- Provide security services to staff, visitors and patients in a courteous manner.
- Enforce hospital rules and regulations, including traffic control, parking and access limitations.
- Project a positive and professional image that supports good hospital and community relations.
- De‑escalate agitated patients, both individually and as part of a team, to prevent potentially risky or violent situations.
- Respond to incidents and coordinate with hospital personnel and law enforcement as required.
- Perform ongoing security patrols and surveillance of hospital premises.
- Experience (required): 6–12 months of on‑the‑job training or a college curriculum in Administration of Justice that covers security and law‑enforcement techniques.
- Experience (preferred): 1 year of security, public safety or law‑enforcement work experience.
- Education (required): High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Education (preferred): Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driving record if required for the position.
- Ability to work all shifts including weekends and holidays, and extended hours based on schedule and organizational needs.
- Physical strength to lift 20–50 lbs and sustain prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking and climbing.
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking, writing and logical thinking.
- Capability to handle multiple priorities in a noisy, fast‑paced environment and adapt to frequent change.
- Lifting 20–50 lbs and other physical tasks listed above.
- Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking and climbing required.
- Strong sensory and emotional acuity for fast‑paced and noisy environments.
