Deputy Sheriff Recruits are paid to attend a six month law enforcement academy at the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy located at 1200 Church Street, Lynchburg, VA. To view the schedule for the basic law enforcement academy :https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./
After successfully completing the academy, Deputy Sheriff Recruits will complete an approximately three month field training program prior to being released on their own.

Qualified recruits, after completion of all training, may be asked to serve in the following positions based on department need;
- Field Operations Deputy
- School Resource Officer
- Bailiff
- Animal Control Officer
This position acts as a representative of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. General duties include enforcing criminal laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Requirements- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must possess a valid Virginia operator's license at the time of employment.
- Must (21) years of age by date of hire or completion of training academy.
- Must not have any felony convictions; a misdemeanor conviction may be grounds for dismissal but will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
- Must not use tobacco products on or off duty to ensure compliance with the Virginia Heart and Lung Laws.
- Must sign a 3 year reimbursement contract at hire.
Must be a High School graduate or possess a General Education Degree Certificate or equivalent.
Special/Additional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history and background investigation, drug screening, medical screening, polygraph, psychological and Lawfit physical agility assessment all with acceptable results. Will be required to work beyond a normal schedule to include rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime to meet the needs of the department. This position is designated as essential personnel. In accordance with the County's personnel policy, essential personnel are critical to the continuation of key operations and services and are expected to report to work, unless otherwise directed by management, in all weather conditions.
