Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative is seeking a dependable, safety-focused Equipment Operator to join our Emporia office. This position plays a critical role in supporting electric line construction, maintenance, and restoration activities throughout the Cooperative’s service territory.
The ideal candidate will have experience operating heavy equipment, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to providing safe, reliable electric service to our members.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Operate specialized equipment used in electric line construction and maintenance, including trenchers, backhoes, derricks, digger trucks, and related equipment
- Assist line crews with installation, maintenance, and repair of electric distribution facilities
- Perform excavation work safely and efficiently while recognizing and responding to hazardous ground conditions
- Load and unload materials, frame poles, cut brush, dig holes and trenches, and support construction activities
- Inspect, maintain, and properly care for Cooperative vehicles, tools, and equipment
- Transport personnel, materials, and equipment to job sites
- Maintain adequate supplies, tools, and safety equipment on assigned vehicles
- Assist with outage restoration and emergency response efforts, including storm recovery
- Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Provide excellent service to Cooperative members and maintain positive public relations
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
- Valid Class A Virginia CDL required or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
- Ability to obtain and maintain:
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Forklift certification
- Virginia Flagger Card and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certifications
- Experience operating heavy equipment such as trenchers, backhoes, derricks, tractors, or similar equipment required
- Experience in electric utility construction, maintenance, or related construction field preferred
- Commitment to workplace safety and OSHA compliance
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate specialized equipment safely
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions
- Dependability, professionalism, and excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work overtime, on-call rotations, and emergency restoration assignments
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting and operating equipment
This position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions and may involve extended hours during outages and emergency restoration efforts. Candidates must reside within 45 minutes of the assigned service area office.
