Summary
Performs complex skilled and difficult technical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, school buses, and other equipment for the school division and county vehicle fleet.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provides general vehicular maintenance and performs routine repair;
- Diagnoses problems, performs major and minor repairs, overhauls, maintains and does replacement work on school buses, cars, trucks, and other equipment;
- Installs replacement parts and provides appropriate adjustments and settings;
- Overhauls brakes, ignition systems, and other vehicle assemblies;
- Tunes engines using standard testing equipment;
- Performs repairs or installation of assemblies or complicated parts;
- Operates various types of shop equipment: machinery, precision instruments, laptop computers, specialized tools;
- Responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service as needed;
- Provides technical advice and assistance to coworkers;
- May recommend purchases and/or retention of vehicles and equipment based on specifications and requirements;
- Required to serve as a substitute bus driver as needed;
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with co-workers, administration, parents, and community members;
- Ability to comprehend oral and written directions;
- Documents vehicle repairs and updates inventories using an electronic fleet management system;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Operating principles of gasoline/diesel engines, power trains, brake systems, electronic assemblies, and motorized equipment;
- Characteristics, repair, and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and heavy/light duty equipment;
- Hazards and safety precautions associated with a shop operation;
- Diagnostic techniques in fault analysis;
- Diagnose mechanical defects and operate and comprehend technical equipment;
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Virginia CDL within the first 60 days of employment with a school bus, passenger, and air brake endorsement.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Preference is given to candidates who have attended formal mechanical training in the applicable field.
- Preference is given to those who have previous school bus-related repair experience.
- Possess or be eligible to obtain a State of Virginia Motor Vehicle Inspectors license within the first 90 days of employment.
- The candidate must own a comprehensive set of mechanic tools and a locking toolbox.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, and crawl to inspect on and under vehicles as necessary.
- Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration and hazards;
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will wear safety glasses, back support belt and leather steel toe shoes; and
- Ability to lift at least 100 pounds.
