Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled, journey‑level mechanical and technical diagnostic work on county vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on cars, light‑duty trucks, fire apparatus, ambulances, and other emergency service vehicles.
  • Diagnose malfunctions in automotive and heavy equipment systems, including fuel injection, gasoline and diesel engines, engine controls, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, HVAC, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical/electronic, air, hydraulic, vacuum, and braking systems.
  • Install, modify, or remove special equipment and accessories such as prisoner partitions, camera systems, defibrillator units, lighting, toolboxes, vehicle graphics, and specialty public safety equipment.
  • Test, diagnose, and resolve drivability problems, component failures, and complex electronic systems using computerized diagnostic tools.
  • Perform Virginia State Inspections and monthly/ semi‑annual school bus inspections for Head Start buses.
  • Enter maintenance data and service records into the computerized system.
  • Respond to after‑hour service calls on a rotational basis and work during inclement or extreme weather conditions as an essential position.
  • Assist customers courteously, check warranty status with dealerships, and complete warranty verification calls.
  • Maintain shop equipment, perform general shop cleaning, and aid in identifying and ordering replacement parts.
  • Transport vehicles to and from external repair locations as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 to 4 years of experience servicing passenger automobiles and light trucks.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to obtain it within one year from hire date.
  • Virginia State Inspection license, forklift operator license, minimum of two ASE certifications, and an A/C Technician Certification (EPA‑approved Section 609).
  • Physical ability to operate vehicles, trucks, tractors, and mechanic’s equipment, involving stooping, bending, climbing stairs or ladders, crawling under vehicles, and handling tools, parts, and tires weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, air, hydraulic, vacuum, braking, steering/suspension, transmission/differential, and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely, read complex technical manuals, interpret PC‑based diagnostic information, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Willingness to respond after hours and during adverse weather conditions as an essential position.
  • Ability to complete required pre‑employment checks, including background, DMV records, and drug/alcohol screening.
