Summary
Welds metal parts with welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram, or work order by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Understands OSHA, AISC & AWS Standards relating to welding and that working safely is a job requirement.
- Understands and complies with CSE, Inc. Safety Program, rules, regulations and updates; works within AISC Standard Practice codes relating to welding.
- Becomes familiar with supervisory personnel, job activity to be performed, site hazard communication program, site safety rules and regulations, and site emergency action.
- Assists with inspecting and identifying hazards associated with all welding.
- Positions parts in jigs or fixtures on bench floor, or clamps parts together along with layout.
- Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable consumable electrode wire through portable welding.
- Selects torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of material.
- Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse; connects regulator valves and hoses to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders.
- Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work.
- Turns regulator valves to activate flow of gases, lights torch and adjusts gas mixture and pressure to obtain desired weld characteristics.
- Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten metal.
- Holds torch at proper angle and guides along weld joint, applying filler rod to molten area to form weld bead.
- Fits materials together prior to welding.
- Has thorough knowledge in fabrication including layout, cutting, grinding.
- Has the ability to weld FCAW, SMAW, and GTAW.
- Assumes responsibility of inspecting equipment, structures or material.
- Examines weld for bead size and other characteristics.
- Repairs broken or cracked metal objects, fills holes, and builds up metal.
- Prepares parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces; welds along vertical, flat, horizontal or overhead weld.
- Scarfs or grooves weld prior to applying filler metal; chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or slag residue.
- Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece; tacks assemblies.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience2+ years of experience.
Language SkillsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsWelding Certification, Valid Driver's License.
Other QualificationsMust be able to travel. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical DemandsRegularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Work EnvironmentRegularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to vibration. Noise level is usually loud.
