Overview
The Gloucester County Public Utilities Department is seeking a qualified and mechanically skilled individual to join the Water Distribution team. The position is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the proper operation of valves, hydrants, and other water distribution infrastructure. Under supervision, the Valve & Hydrant Technician performs specialized semi-skilled work related to hydrant and valve inspections, cleaning, repairs, and replacement. Work involves use of vehicles, machinery, hand tools, and technology.
Employee must exercise independent judgment in completing assigned tasks and interact tactfully with customers and the public.
Position reports to the Utility Foreman.
Responsibilities- Locate, lubricate, inspect, exercise, and document valves in the County utility system; submit work orders for repairs as necessary.
- Inspect and flush hydrants in the County utility system; document rebuilds and replacements; submit work orders for repairs as necessary.
- Identify valve castings that are inaccessible and address so valves can be properly utilized when needed.
- Document inspections in the file for access by staff as necessary.
- Collaborate with other Utility crews, fire departments, County staff, VDOT, contractors and others to address line repairs, replacements, and emergencies.
- Perform general and preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Perform general maintenance of utility buildings and grounds, including mowing and landscaping duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of directly related experience.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license; driving record must meet established Gloucester County standards.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Class A endorsement preferred.
- Pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination. Position subject to subsequent physical examinations to ensure incumbent meets physical job requirements.
