REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance and Facilities
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month employment

- Graduation from high school or general education (GED) certificate; four years of experience or demonstrated ability in at least one building trade (painting, locksmith, flooring, masonry, small engine or appliance repair) or general building or grounds maintenance; or any combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities or skills:
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and practices of the various trades;
- Thorough knowledge of local, State and Federal building and safety codes;
- Thorough knowledge of shop equipment and safety procedures;
- Ability to comply with all the safety rules and regulations of the trade;
- Ability to read and write and to work from blueprints and specifications;
- Ability to use computers for work orders, e-mail, and ordering materials;
- Skill in the application of methods, techniques and tools used in the various trades, for new construction, maintenance and repairs;
- Skill in the care and use of tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and, may require, a valid Virginia commercial driver's license. Requires journeyman certification in State regulated trade or equivalent combination of education and experience at a master trade level.
This is highly skilled journey-level work in the construction or maintenance and repair of all facilities, grounds and equipment throughout the Pittsylvania County School System. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Maintenance Director.
Essential Job Functions- Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment:
- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
- Frequently works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk or electrical shock, and vibration.
- Noise level is usually moderate.
- Perform highly skilled facilities and grounds maintenance work using a variety of materials, tools, equipment and techniques;
- Perform skilled work with electric and gasoline tools and equipment;
- Operate large trucks and heavy equipment, as necessary, to perform various maintenance activities;
- Perform other trades work, as necessary, for the successful completion of work orders or projects;
- Lead or instruct lower level employees in the techniques of the various trades and in the use, care and operation of tools and materials of the trade;
- Build and tear down scaffolding;
- Perform preventive maintenance checks and repairs to all building and grounds systems;
- Communicate with principals and school staff;
- Coordinate work orders and shop activities with schools and other trades;
- Attend classes to continuously improve knowledge and keep abreast of changing technology;
- Respond to emergency duty assignments when required;
- Perform material ordering and record keeping duties;
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
