The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Senior Family Services Specialist to act as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Case Manager that will ensure the safety, permanency and well-being of children and families impacted by abuse or neglect with a focused attention on pregnant and/or parenting mothers impacted by substance use.
What You Do and How You Do It:
As a Senior Family Services Specialist, you will provide case management to parents, children, and their support systems. Your responsibilities will span the full child welfare continuum, from completing CPS Family Assessments for substance-exposed infants and initiating prevention services for pregnant mothers, to providing ongoing support in Family Preservation, CPS Investigations, and In-Home and Permanency cases. You will use your understanding of substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders to assess needs, link mothers and children to necessary services, and provide supportive counseling.
This includes assisting individuals with accessing treatment, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) if needed, and monitoring substance use. You will also perform administrative duties such as maintaining accurate case documentation, completing service and transition plans, and tracking statistical data for grant compliance. A key part of your role is providing consultation to other Senior Family Services Specialists, collaborating with community providers, and acting as a liaison between family members, medical providers, the legal system, and other agencies.
You will also conduct outreach to establish and maintain community partnerships, serve on work groups, and continuously engage in training and development to enhance your knowledge of kinship needs and substance use disorders. This may also involve coordinating Kin First tasks, such as creating safety plans and completing Permanency Assessment Tools (PAT) with potential caregivers. Perform other work as required.
Here's What You Need:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22
VAC
40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia). - Considerable experience in assigned program area/human services programs and completion of required training programs.
- Or an Equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable.
- Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) certification is desirable.
- Experience working with pregnant and parenting mothers impacted by substance use preferred.
- Knowledge of social work principles and practices; human behavior and motivational theory; and social, economic, and health problems preferred.
- Knowledge of social service system and coordination of all units within agency preferred.
- Knowledge of family dynamics, child abuse, neglect, domestic violence, trauma, and the effects of trauma preferred.
- Knowledge of community resources such as housing, mental health, and substance use disorder services, employment, medical care and other benefits preferred.
- Skills in assessing child safety and risk along with family dynamics, mental illnesses, substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors, and domestic violence preferred.
- Skill in engaging with high-risk/argumentative/resistant families and in being assertive, confident, respectful, and professional preferred.
- Ability to interview, assess needs, counsel and refer clients to other resources as needed and to develop and implement service plans to ensure the delivery of appropriate services to clients preferred.
