Family Services Specialist I and II
Overview
:
Entry‑level to full‑performance social workers responsible for developing individualized service plans and managing caseloads across Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care, Adoption, Child Care, and Employment Services.
- Interpret laws, policies, and regulations applicable to the assigned program area.
- Coordinate, monitor, and administer specific programs.
- Conduct client interviews, assess needs, and develop service plans.
- Inform clients of programs, rules, regulations, and their rights to participate.
- Provide case management services and monitor client compliance.
- Manage program waiting lists and track expenditures, preparing/submitting budget estimates.
- Complete necessary federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
- Serve as a resource to clients and the community; provide after‑hours on‑call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and foster care.
- For Family Services Specialist II, perform tasks independently with minimal supervisory input; for Specialist I, seek supervisory review as needed.
- Knowledge of social work principles, human behavior, and motivation theory.
- Understanding of laws, policies, and regulations related to human services program areas.
- Skill operating a motor vehicle, valid Virginia driver’s license, and personal computer with office software.
- Strong communication skills—both oral and written.
- Ability to interview, assess needs, counsel, refer clients, and develop service plans.
- Ability to analyze case information and make sound judgments within existing laws and policies.
- Strong organizational skills—planning, managing work activities, preparing reports, and maintaining records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and stay current with field developments.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or equivalent field with at least two years of related experience in a human services area. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license is desirable.
Preferred Qualifications- BSW or MSW degree and/or Virginia Social Worker license.
- Prior experience in foster care, child protective services, or agency software.
- Complete training in required program areas.
- Subject to DMV/driving record check, pre‑employment drug screen, and criminal history search.
- Fingerprint checks, background investigations, and employment verification will be conducted.
- Willingness to work outside regular hours, participate in on‑call schedule, and respond within 30 minutes.
