Job SummaryThe position is responsible for assisting with ensuring the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of students with disabilities to and from school.
Essential Duties- Operates the hydraulic lift equipment on a bus for the purpose of loading and unloading students in wheelchairs.
- Secures each student in the appropriate location utilizing either harnesses, seat belts, wheelchair locks, or other safety equipment.
- Maintains discipline in accordance with division regulations.
- Assists with emergency evacuation drills in accordance with division regulations.
- Instructs riders on responsible passenger behavior.
- Reports absences promptly to enable the supervisor to secure a substitute aide.
- Learns the physical and emotional needs of each student on the bus.
- Remains alert and exercises good judgment during emergencies, vehicle issues, and when addressing special requests from riders' parents.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Meets state physical examination requirements.
- Ability to deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of riders.
- Ability to lift and/or carry children as required.
- Knowledge of first aid techniques and the ability to administer when necessary.
- Ability to recognize problems and act quickly to solve them.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer, and operate equipment; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person, outdoors, and on the phone;
physical agility to lift to 100 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
Duties are usually performed on a school bus or in a school environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
