Family Services Supervisor-Prevention

General Description

The position is a supervisory role serving the localities of Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. It directs the Prevention Unit, including In-Home Services, Family Support, and Family Partnership Meeting facilitation staff, who provide direct services and case management to children and families to prevent foster care due to abuse or neglect. The supervisor also oversees clerical staff and a Human Services Assistant, and reports to the agency’s Assistant Director and/or Director.

• Supervise and provide direct oversight of a Prevention Services unit.
• Evaluate, assign cases, and monitor caseloads to ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
• Monitor staff performance, resolve complex policy and customer service issues, and maintain professional relationships with community partners.
• Implement new policies, ensure staff are appropriately trained, provide CPS on-call supervision coverage as needed, and serve and manage emergency shelters when required.

• Working knowledge of laws, policies, procedures, and programs relevant to In-Home and Prevention services, and principles, practices, and techniques of social work and casework.
• Thorough knowledge of current social, economic, and health problems, child, adolescent, and adult behavior, and techniques for interviewing, counseling, and investigating problems.
• Knowledge of community resources for social services.
• Skill in operating a computer to enter, retrieve or modify data, and using word processing, spreadsheets, case management databases, email, internet and other programs. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Google applications.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, assign, and supervise staff; evaluate performance; communicate complex ideas orally and in writing; build effective relationships with clients, officials, partners, and the public; collect and analyze complex data, prepare technical reports; plan and execute in-service training and employee development programs; use tact, diplomacy, and a customer‑service ethic; and identify and implement policies and procedures to maximize efficiency and cost savings.

A bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field, or any field plus at least two years of related experience in a Human Services area, per Section 22

Experience in Protection of Prevention programs and completion of required training, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree is preferred.

• Applicants may be subject to Criminal History background checks, Central Registry checks, DMV/driving record checks, as well as checks from State Police, FBI, local agencies, employment verification, references, education verification, and credit checks. Successful completion of all required checks is mandatory.
• All employees must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record meeting agency requirements.
• Employees must be willing to work in a community emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
