Job Overview
Provides transportation to passengers along a designated route between the Colonial National Park Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center and the American Revolution Museum addition to transport, the driver offers information about attractions, operating hours, and pricing for cruise ships, charters, tour buses, restaurants, and other local points of interest.
Key Responsibilities- Operate a trolley bus over established routes and transport passengers efficiently.
- Point out attractions along the route and provide accurate, engaging information.
- Assist passengers in boarding and disembarking the trolley.
- Inspect the vehicle prior to daily operations, identifying any maintenance discrepancies.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the trolley, both inside and outside.
- Operate vehicle‑mounted technology and a two‑way radio.
- Refuel and perform routine preventive maintenance checks, including fluid levels and tire pressure.
- Track and record passenger counts, mileage, fuel usage, and related data.
- Report vehicle maintenance problems to the supervisor.
- Work flexible schedules, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings for special events.
- Adhere to a minimum six‑hour shift requirement.
Must be physically able to sit in and operate a 50‑passenger trolley bus. The job involves walking, standing, stooping, and bending while conducting pre‑trip inspections and cleaning the trolley. Requires gripping a steering wheel, occasionally climbing steps, pushing or pulling passengers in wheelchairs, and operating passenger counters.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent education and experience.
- Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (Class
B) with a P endorsement, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire. - Experience driving vehicles ranging from 15‑passenger vans to 50‑passenger trolley buses.
- Ability to operate a vehicle with air brakes.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment checks, including criminal history, background, and DMV record checks.
- Prior experience as a school bus driver or public transit operator is preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of highway operating rules and procedures.
- General knowledge of the Yorktown area and ability to provide directions to local points of interest.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in using a two‑way radio for communication.
- Capability to resolve customer complaints and concerns effectively.
- Skills in pre‑ and post‑maintenance activities required of trolley drivers.
- Comfortable providing narrative explanations while transporting passengers.
The trolley operates daily from March through the end of October, with select dates offered in November through February.
