Salary: $26,504 - $40,115 (Commensurate with Experience) Grade: 3BF
Primary PurposeThis position provides safe transportation of students to and from school. The driver is responsible for daily pre‑trip inspections, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, enforcing safety rules, and following assigned routes and schedules.

- Operate a school bus safely and efficiently.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, staff, parents, and students.
- Obey all traffic laws and observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
- Enforce Northampton Code of Behavior.
- Maintain discipline when students are on the bus and report unacceptable behavior to the proper authority.
- Keep the assigned bus clean.
- Maintain schedule and discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Inspect the bus before each operation for mechanical defects.
- Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
- Exercise responsible leadership when on out‑of‑division school trips.
- Transport only authorized students.
- Report all accidents and complete required reports.
- Make required reports on assigned due dates.
- Meet all requirements of the State Board of Education, including but not limited to:
- Compliance with Motor Vehicles Laws and Regulations of the State Board of Education.
- Operate the bus over the assigned route without unauthorized changes.
- Wear the driver’s safety belt system.
- Use a substitute driver who is approved by the division superintendent.
- Stop in the right‑hand lane of the highway for receiving or discharging pupils at designated stops, ensuring visibility for a safe distance.
- Exercise care for the safety and comfort of pupils en route, preventing riders from standing or leaning out of windows.
- Complete and record daily pre‑trip inspections, reporting needed repairs in writing.
- Govern the bus speed according to law‑established limits.
- Stop at railroad crossings, using hazard lights appropriately and ensuring it is safe to cross.
- Maintain discipline and report disobedience to the school principal.
- Use reflective triangles and notify authorities during a breakdown; keep pupils aboard unless conditions warrant evacuation or transfer.
- Avoid prohibited use of alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, profane language, and ensure students conduct themselves likewise.
- Attend required meetings, training sessions, and make all reports as required.
- Be accountable for reflective triangles, first‑aid kit, and fire extinguisher.
- Prevent objects that restrict passage to entrances or exits; keep loose items away from the bus.
- The greatest care shall be exercised at all times in transportation of school children.
- The maximum speed limit for school buses shall be 45 miles per hour or the minimum speed allowable, whichever is greater, on any highway where the maximum speed limit is 55 miles per hour or less, and 60 miles per hour on all interstate highways and on other highways where the maximum speed limit is more than 55 miles per hour.
- All school buses must be inspected and maintained at least once every 45 school days, or 5,000 miles, with no gaps exceeding 90 school days.
- The number of pupils may not exceed the manufacturer's capacity; standing is prohibited except in emergencies.
- The driver shall open and close the entrance door, keeping it securely closed while the bus is in motion.
- Every bus shall be equipped with traffic warning devices that operate for a required distance before stopping.
- When stopping on highways, stops must be made in the right‑hand lane at designated points with safety lights active.
- Drivers must wear safety belts while the bus is in motion.
- Schedules must show start times, pickup points, and arrival times; copies must be kept on board and in management office.
- At railway grade crossings, hazard lights are activated pre‑crossing, and the driver determines safety before crossing.
